With an early Lent and Easter this year, we are invited to begin giving prayerful consideration to the 2016 One Great Hour of Sharing offering. Since 1949 Presbyterians have shared God's love with our neighbors in need around the world through One Great Hour of Sharing. Last year, our Easter gift was distributed as follows:

32% Presbyterian Diseaster Assistance, providing relief to those affected by natural disasters

36% Presbyterian Hunger Program, providing food to the hungry

32% to the Self-Development of People, helping to empower the poor and oppressed.

For 2016, we are collecting the One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) offering on Passion/Palm Sunday, March 20, 2016 and on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016. Please help us exceed our prior Year's goal of $600.00. For more information see the OGHS page.

GREETINGS FROM MISSION RECIPIENTS IN NIGER Our favorite part of playing & living in Niger is “playing outside under the shade of a tree in the dust and sand.”  The leaves we found outside our house are, “marenga (good for eating), mango and pomegranate. They are still green because we just got done with the rainy season here.”  We like to do things here with the kids like “playing with soccer balls, rolling tires, and even playing tickle wars!”  We hope you have fun “playing in leaves, building snowmen and wearing warm clothes and stockings.” Your friends, Adeline and Simeon (children of missionaries Michael and Rachel Ludwig)
**See the December 2014 Newsletter for more from our friends in Niger.**

Since that day, more than $100 million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. Through this mission, young people, especially, learn what it's like to make a positive difference in the world - as they collect food, raise money and volunteer to work in charities that provide shelter to the homeless, food to the hungry and compassion to those in need:  Be part of this movement that is sharing God's love with those in need. While enjoying the football playoffs throughout January leading up to the Super Bowl on February 7, 2016, please consider giving generously to the Souper Bowl of Caring (monetary or with a can of soup or soup mix). It doesn't presume you know, have sung or want to sing or like a particular hymn. There is more information about this in the February Newsletter.
  • Maundy Thursday Service - 2015 at Grace Episcopal Church. This year we will join our friends at Grace Episcopal Church for an agape meal followed by worship on Thursday, April 2, 2015 at Grace Episcopal Church.
  • The agape meal starts at 6:00 PM in the Grace Episcopal parish house. This meal is not exactly a Christian Seder (Jewish meal commemorating the Passover). or a Lenten soup supper. Instead, this meal evokes the type of meal that the early Christians would share each week before worship. The fare is simple - soups, salad, dates, nuts, hummus, pita bread, and wine (or grape juice). The meal is punctuated by several toasts and several times of reflection. This is a sit-down meal so we do need to have a head count of those who plan to attend. If you have not signed-up in the fellowshiip hall and plan to attend, please call Rev. Cavanaugh at 1-815-776-0253 as soon as possible.
  • The shared Maundy Thursday service at 7 - Whether or not you attend the agape meal, all are invited to our shared Maundy Thursday service at 7 PM at Grace Episcopal Church. This solemn and beautiful service commemorates the last night Jesus shared with his disciples before his arrest. During this service, we will remember that Last Supper in our celebration of the Eucharist. We will remember Christ's loving service as we are invited to participate in a footwashing. We will remember the love that Christ showed for us by enduring arrest, trial, and execution on our behalf as we journey to the cross through the hearing and reading of scripture. Please join us on Thursday evening for this solumn service of enacted prayer and remembrance.
  • 2015 United Good Friday Service: The three days leading up to Easter are among the holiest time of the Christian year. Each year, the United Churches of Galena hosts a Good Friday service to remember the day of Jesus's death even as we prepare to celebrate his resurrection on Easter Sunday. This year, Westminster United Presbyterian Church is hosting this solumn and beautiful service. The service begins at Noon on Friday, April 3rd and will last approximately 45 minutes. It includes special music from a shared choir, directed by Pam McKinsey, prayers, solumn intercessions, solumn reproaches of the cross, and a time for reflection and enacted prayer. Even though this service remembers Christ's painful crucifixion, we Christians deem it "good" because death is not the last word. As we prepare to celebrate Christ's resurrection on Easter, please consider joining us as we remember that Christ's great love for us came at a great cost.
  • Combined Vacation Bible School - Details to be announced.
  • Community Soup Supper every Wednesday in February 2015 from 5-7PM at First Presbyterian Church.

Community Hunger Luncheon

  • The Hunger Luncheon benefits the United Churches of Galena Community Food Pantry which helps families in need. This is the only major fundraiser for the Galena Food Pantry.
  • 2015
  • Each church is asked to sponsor a table for $200. Each table will seat ten (10) people; thus, each individual's donation would be $20.
  • This year a unique lunch (cod fish, bread, olive oil and grape juice) will be served. A shor program will be held based on the Scripture of Jesus feeding the 5,000.
  • Westminster is seeking 10 individuals who would like to attend. Contact Rev. Stacy Cavanaugh or Helen if you would like to attend.
