2015 CHURCH WORLD SERVICE SCHOOL KITS
As you will note there is an article in the June newsletter telling about the Apple Tree school kits for our local school children. This year, alongside the Apple Tree for our local children, there will be an “APPLE TREE” for schoolkits for Church World Service (CWS).
Each congregation in Blackhawk Presbytery is challenged to complete 50 school kits or 35 school kits and 1 emergency clean-up kit to be taken to the November Presbytery meeting. Westminster P.W. at their June 10 meeting voted to do the 50 school kits.
In order to meet this challenge, let’s purchase school supplies for these school kits while school items are on sale! These apples will be yellow or green in color rather than the red ones for our local children. The same process will be followed for these “apples”—apples available on July 5th. Please sign the notebook designated for CWS school kits. There will be a special box or boxes for returning these items. These school kits will be assembled later, probably in September or early October.
Items that will be on the yellow or green apples are:
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN SEWING A SCHOOL BAG, please contact Helen. You will need pieces of material ½ yard of “Kid Friendly” material, if possible. The school supplies for CWS are to be put in a 12” x 14” up to 14” x 17” finished cotton or lightweight canvas bag with cloth handles. Thus, if you have any pieces of material that could be used for these school bags, please consider donating the material. If you would like a pattern for this school bag, please contact Helen at (815) 281-0978 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you have any other questions about this project, please contact Helen also.
Presbyterian Women’s Work Session
Westminster Presbyterian Women (P.W.) will meet Wednesday, October 14, at 11 a.m. at church for a Work Session. The purpose of the Work Session is to assemble the 50 Church World Service (CWS) school kits. Then at noon we will enjoy a potluck dinner. Everyone is asked to bring a dish-to-pass. Following our potluck dinner, the regular P.W. meeting will take place. Come and join in the good fellowship and food. If you cannot come for all three events, join us for what you wish. A big “THANK YOU” to all those who participated in sewing and/or purchasing of school items for these kits!
Church World Services School Kits
2014 CHURCH WORLD SERVICES (CWS) SCHOOL KITS
This fall (2014), CHURCH WORLD SERVICES informed all concerned entities that School Kits continued to be the most-needed kit. Some 52,000 CWS School Kits were requested by partner agencies to meet program needs in 2014. CWS indicated that they did not have enough school kits to fill the full request and that they were in great need of school kits to fill both international and domestic requests.
School kits consist of handmade school bags filled with notebooks, pencils, pencil sharpeners, large erasers, crayons, scissors and rulers. Emergency Clean-up Buckets contain scouring pads, scrub brushes, sponges, towels, laundry detergent, household cleaner, disinfectant dish soap, clothesline and clothes pins, dust masks, latex and work gloves, trash bags and insect repellent.
This year, Westminster Presbyterian Church, through its Presbyterian Women’s organization, assembled 36 School Kits, 1 Hygiene Kit and 1 Emergency Clean-Up Bucket. Pastor Stacy and Dianne Burlison took the kits to the November 11th Presbytery meeting at Stronghold Camp and Retreat Center, a facility operated by the Presbytery of Blackhawk, Presbyterian Church (USA). From there the kits will be transported to the local warehouse by the Elgin Mission Van for free. The kits will then go to a facility on the East Coast where they will ultimately be sent to those in greatest need. Westminster also provided the $2 per kit for postage to send the kits to their final destination.
Westminster is proud to have met this important mission challenge again this year!!!
